The Best Wedding Photography and Film Locations in Christchurch, New Zealand

Christchurch is having a moment. After years of rebuilding and renewal, it’s emerged as one of New Zealand’s most dynamic and photogenic wedding destinations — and couples are starting to notice.

Whether you’re local to Canterbury or flying in for a destination wedding, Christchurch offers an extraordinary range of backdrops — from formal English-style gardens and Victorian architecture to dramatic coastal cliffs and the wide-open Canterbury plains. The light here is different too: long, golden hours in summer and a clarity that’s uniquely South Island.

At VOWLY, we’ve documented weddings across Christchurch and the wider Canterbury region, and we always come away with images that surprise even us. Here’s our honest guide to the best spots in the city — the well-known ones and a few that don’t show up on the tourist maps.

The Botanic Gardens in early morning light — one of Christchurch’s most timeless backdrops.

1. Christchurch Botanic Gardens

There’s a reason the Botanic Gardens appear on almost every Christchurch wedding shortlist. Spread across 21 hectares in the heart of the city, the gardens offer an extraordinary variety of settings within a short walk — from the formal rose garden and lily pond to wilder woodland trails and open lawns alongside the Avon River.

What makes the Botanic Gardens exceptional for wedding photography is the quality of light filtered through the established tree canopy. Even on a bright summer day, the dappled shade creates a natural, flattering softness. The rose garden at peak bloom between November and March is genuinely spectacular.

Best time to visit

Port Hills — What to KnowBotanic Gardens at a Glance

• Best season: October–March (gardens at full bloom)

• Best time of day: Early morning before 9am, or golden hour

• Permit required: Yes — apply through Christchurch City Council for commercial photography

• Style: Romantic, timeless, English garden

One tip from years of shooting here: arrive early. The gardens open at dawn, and the first hour of light on a clear morning is absolutely stunning — long shadows, golden warmth, and barely another soul in sight.

2. Hagley Park

Immediately next to the Botanic Gardens, Hagley Park is one of the largest urban parks in New Zealand — over 164 hectares of open grassland, mature trees, and easy-walking paths. As a photography backdrop it gives you breathing room that the gardens sometimes don’t.

The avenue of plane trees along Park Terrace is particularly magnificent in autumn (April–May), when the leaves turn amber and gold and create a natural tunnel of colour. For couples with autumn wedding dates, this spot alone is worth choosing Christchurch for.

“The avenue of plane trees in autumn turns Hagley Park into something you’d expect to find in Paris — not in Canterbury.”

3. The Port Hills

For couples after something more dramatic, the Port Hills deliver in a way few Christchurch locations can match. The elevated ridge offers sweeping panoramic views across the Canterbury Plains to the Southern Alps in one direction, and down into Lyttelton Harbour in the other. On a clear day, the view stretches for hundreds of kilometres.

Pro tip

Port Hills — What to Know

• Access: Dyers Pass Road — a scenic 15-minute drive from central Christchurch

• Best for: Panoramic shots, dramatic skies, sunset golden hour

• Note: Wind can be significant on the ridge — factor this into dress and hair planni

4. Lyttelton & the Harbour

Just 12 minutes through the tunnel from central Christchurch, Lyttelton feels like a completely different world. The historic port town sits on the edge of a volcanic harbour, with colourful weatherboard cottages stacked up the hillside and a working waterfront below. It’s got genuine character — the kind that’s impossible to manufacture.

The Lyttelton Ferry wharf, the hilltop streets, and the views across the harbour all offer exceptional photographic opportunities. For couples who love coastal light, salt air, and a slightly bohemian edge to their images, Lyttelton is a brilliant choice.

5. The Arts Centre & Victoria Square

Christchurch’s rebuilt city centre offers some genuinely striking architectural backdrops. The restored Arts Centre — a cluster of Gothic Revival stone buildings that once housed Canterbury University — is particularly impressive, with its towers, arched colonnades, and cobbled courtyards.

VOWLY tip

Christchurch city centre is at its most photogenic in the early morning — streets are quiet, light is low and warm, and you have the architecture largely to yourselves. If your timeline allows for a city shoot before the ceremony, it’s absolutely worth it.
