At 3,724 metres, Aoraki Mount Cook is New Zealand’s highest mountain — and one of its most extraordinary wedding destinations. The scale of the landscape here is unlike anything else in the country. Glaciers, alpine lakes, braided rivers, and a peak that disappears into cloud. If you want your wedding photos to make people stop scrolling, this is where you come.
Mount Cook Village sits at the end of State Highway 80, two hours north of Lake Tekapo and completely surrounded by mountains. There’s no through road — it’s the end of the line, and it feels like it. That sense of remoteness and arrival is part of what makes it so powerful as a wedding location.
The Hooker Valley Track — one of New Zealand’s most accessible alpine walks, leading to jaw-dropping views of Aoraki Mount Cook and the surrounding glaciers.
The most accessible and most dramatic walk in the Mount Cook area runs 10km return through the Hooker Valley to the Hooker Glacier terminal lake — with Mount Cook growing larger and more imposing with every step. Three swing bridges cross braided river channels, and the view from the glacier lake at the end — icebergs floating on milky blue water, Aoraki filling the sky — is genuinely overwhelming.
For couples willing to walk, this track delivers some of the most extraordinary wedding photography in New Zealand. The images look almost impossible. They’re not edited — that’s just what the Hooker Valley looks like.
The approach to Mount Cook along the shores of Lake Pukaki is one of the great drives in New Zealand. The glacier-fed lake is an electric turquoise blue — at certain light levels it looks completely artificial — and Mount Cook sits at the far end like a reward for the journey. The lupins that bloom along the lake margins in November and December make this one of the most intensely beautiful locations in the country during that season.
For genuinely adventurous couples, the Mueller Hut route climbs steeply from the village to a DOC hut at 1,800 metres with 360-degree views of the Southern Alps. It’s a serious mountain hike requiring proper fitness and footwear — but the images from up here are in a category of their own. Wide open alpine sky, glacier views in every direction, the village far below. Extraordinary.
Several operators run helicopter flights from Mount Cook Village to glacier landings on the Tasman and Franz Josef Glaciers. A glacier elopement — standing on ancient ice at altitude, surrounded by nothing but mountain and sky — is one of the most extraordinary wedding experiences New Zealand offers. We travel with the helicopter, document the ceremony and portraits, and fly back with you.

The Hermitage — Mount Cook’s iconic hotel — sits with unobstructed views directly towards Aoraki. The grounds, the outdoor terraces, and the surrounding grassed areas all frame the mountain magnificently. For couples wanting a more relaxed shoot without a significant walk, the Hermitage provides a world-class view that requires nothing more than stepping outside.
New Zealand’s longest glacier stretches over 23 kilometres through the mountains east of Mount Cook. The terminal lake — filled with icebergs calved from the glacier face — is accessible by a short walk and boat tour. The scale and drama of icebergs floating on a glacial lake against a backdrop of mountains is completely unlike anything else in the country.
Like Lake Tekapo nearby, Mount Cook sits within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. The night skies here are among the clearest and most star-dense in the world. For couples interested in a twilight ceremony or a night shoot under the Milky Way, the combination of the mountain silhouette and the dark sky reserve creates images of extraordinary power.
We’d love to plan a shoot here with you. It’s one of the most extraordinary places we’ve ever worked. Get in touch.
