Dunedin is New Zealand’s Victorian city — and one of its most underrated wedding destinations. Gothic stone architecture, botanical gardens, rugged coastal cliffs, and one of the most beautiful historic garden estates in the southern hemisphere. If you’re after character, Dunedin delivers it in abundance.
We travel to Dunedin regularly for weddings and elopements, and it consistently surprises us. While couples flock to Queenstown and Wanaka, Dunedin offers something they simply can’t — genuine heritage, urban drama, and a coastline that feels like the edge of the world. Here are the 8 locations we keep returning to.
University of Otago, Clocktower — one of the most photographed buildings in New Zealand and a breathtaking architectural backdrop for wedding portraits.
Perched above the Otago Harbour on the Otago Peninsula, Glenfalloch is one of New Zealand’s most beautiful garden estates. The 12-hectare woodland garden features mature rhododendrons, azaleas, specimen trees, and winding paths that lead to water’s edge views across the harbour. In spring, the garden is absolutely spectacular.
VOWLY Favourite
Glenfalloch at a Glance
• Location: 430 Portobello Road, Otago Peninsula — 20 minutes from central Dunedin
• Best season: Spring (September–November) for rhododendrons and azaleas in full bloom
• Best time: Morning light through the tree canopy is exceptional
• Style: Romantic, lush, garden estate — feels like the English countryside
• Venue: The property includes a restaurant and function space available for receptions
Built in 1906 in Flemish Renaissance style, the Dunedin Railway Station is one of the most photographed buildings in New Zealand. Its striking black-and-white stone facade, ornate clock tower, and intricate mosaic tile floors create architectural backdrops of extraordinary richness. The grand booking hall in particular — with its Royal Doulton tile murals and sweeping staircase — is genuinely world-class for editorial-style portraits.
New Zealand’s only castle sits dramatically on the Otago Peninsula, surrounded by 35 acres of formal garden with sweeping views across the Otago Harbour and southern bays. The castle ballroom, the walled garden, and the grounds each offer completely different aesthetics within a single location. For couples who want genuine architectural grandeur alongside natural beauty, Larnach Castle is without equal in the South Island.
VOWLY tip
Book Larnach Castle as early as possible — it’s one of the most sought-after wedding venues in Dunedin. Weekend dates fill 12–18 months ahead. The castle offers on-site accommodation for the wedding party, which makes for beautifully relaxed morning getting-ready shoots.

The long arm of land extending east from Dunedin is one of the most dramatic coastal landscapes in New Zealand. Wild clifftops, sheltered bays, rugged farmland rolling to the sea’s edge, and views that on a clear day stretch to the horizon. The peninsula road winds through a series of extraordinary vantage points — from Hoopers Inlet to Sandymount and the clifftops above Sandfly Bay.
For couples who want coastal drama without the crowds, the Otago Peninsula is a revelation. The light here — particularly in the late afternoon and on overcast days — has a moody, cinematic quality that’s unlike anywhere else in New Zealand.
A short drive south of central Dunedin, Tunnel Beach is reached via a hand-cut tunnel through sandstone cliffs that opens onto a dramatic, secluded cove. The layered rock formations, sea arches, and crashing waves create a genuinely extraordinary natural backdrop. It’s a 20-minute walk each way — entirely worth the effort for images that look unlike anything else in New Zealand.
For Adventurous Couples
Tunnel Beach — What to Know
• Access: 20 min walk from carpark — wear appropriate footwear
• Best time: Late afternoon for golden coastal light
• Style: Raw, dramatic, completely unique — feels like the edge of the world
• Note: The beach itself is not always accessible at high tide — check tide times before planning
New Zealand’s oldest botanic garden covers 28 hectares in the city’s North End. The rhododendron dell is magnificent in spring, the rose garden at summer peak is classic and beautiful, and the heritage aviary and rock garden offer unexpected pockets of charm. Like Christchurch’s Botanic Gardens, the Dunedin version rewards early morning visits — the light through the established canopy before 9am is genuinely outstanding.
Dunedin’s Gothic Revival Anglican cathedral is one of the finest ecclesiastical buildings in New Zealand. The soaring interior — with its stone columns, stained glass, and vaulted ceiling — creates a ceremony setting of real majesty. The exterior steps, framed by the Octagon and the surrounding Victorian streetscape, make for powerful formal portraits.
Dunedin’s surf beach stretches south of the city, backed by an esplanade of Norfolk pines and the flat coastal plain. For something completely different — open sky, salt air, breaking waves — St Clair offers a beautiful natural contrast to Dunedin’s urban and garden settings. Sunrise and sunset shoots here are spectacular, particularly when the low light catches the surf.
