There are places in New Zealand that are beautiful year-round, and then there’s Arrowtown in autumn — which is in a category entirely its own. For four to six weeks each year, usually from late April through May, this small gold-rush town near Queenstown transforms into something that looks borrowed from a European fairy tale.
The main street’s liquid amber and oak trees turn brilliant shades of crimson, amber, and gold. The Arrow River runs cold and clear between stone banks and turning willows. The surrounding Otago hills go tawny and rust-coloured. And above it all, the first snow of the season appears on the mountain peaks. As wedding photographers, this is the time of year we look forward to most.
Arrowtown’s main street in late April — one of the most spectacular natural colour displays in the Southern Hemisphere.
Arrowtown sits in a sheltered valley at around 450 metres above sea level — just high enough that its autumn arrives more dramatically than in Queenstown, but sheltered enough that the temperatures remain comfortable through May. The combination of deciduous trees planted by early settlers and the surrounding native bush creates a colour palette that is genuinely extraordinary.
The 1860s gold rush left Arrowtown with a legacy of heritage stone buildings, miner’s cottages, and one of the best-preserved historic streetscapes in New Zealand. For wedding photography, this means architectural detail and character that most other South Island locations simply don’t offer. The combination of historic buildings and autumn foliage creates images that feel like they belong somewhere between a New Zealand novel and a French countryside film.
“Every October, we start getting enquiries from couples who want to book Arrowtown for the following autumn. The word is out — and for good reason.”

Iconic
The Main Street (Buckingham Street)
• The liquid amber trees that line the street are at their most spectacular in late April to mid-May
• Early morning — before the shops open and the tourists arrive — is the best time for portraits here
• The heritage buildings provide natural framing and genuine character in every direction
• The light in autumn on Buckingham Street in the morning is warm, low, and gorgeous — we can’t overstate this
Natural Beauty
The Arrow River
• The river runs alongside the town through willows and river stones
• In autumn, the willows create arching canopies of golden light over the water
• Multiple crossing points allow for creative compositions and walking shots
• Follow the river west towards Lake Hayes for quieter, more intimate settings
• The river in winter runs with perfect clarity — moody and beautiful in a completely different way
Historic Character
Chinese Settlement & Bush Creek
• One of the best-preserved Chinese settlement sites in New Zealand — authentic stone huts and creek scenery
• Bush Creek runs alongside, with overhanging willows and stone-walled paths
• Feels entirely removed from the main tourist flow
• Best in late afternoon light — the warmth picks up the golden stone beautifully
Lake Hayes, located on the road between Arrowtown and Queenstown, is one of New Zealand’s most reliably calm and reflective lakes. In autumn, the surrounding willows and poplar trees are fully coloured, and their reflection in the still water creates images of almost surreal beauty.
Many of our favourite Arrowtown shoots combine time in the town with a late afternoon session at Lake Hayes — catching the golden hour light over the water as the final act of the day. The two locations work together naturally, and the 10-minute drive between them is hardly an interruption at all.
VOWLY tip – Peak colour timing
Arrowtown’s autumn colour typically peaks between late April and mid-May, though this varies year to year depending on temperature. The Arrowtown Autumn Festival usually falls in late April and marks the beginning of peak colour. If you want to guarantee the best colour, aim for the last week of April or the first two weeks of May, and keep a weather eye on the forecast for the preceding weeks.
Autumn gets all the attention — and rightly so — but Arrowtown is beautiful year-round, and each season brings something different.
Arrowtown makes an exceptional elopement setting — particularly for couples who want warmth and character rather than epic grandeur. The historic streetscape provides a human-scale backdrop that the mountain landscapes don’t offer, and the Arrow River is intimate and beautiful in a way that works perfectly for small ceremonies.
A simple Arrowtown elopement might look like this: a morning ceremony under the willows at the river’s edge, portraits through the autumn-lit streets, lunch at one of the town’s excellent cafes, and late afternoon portraits at Lake Hayes as the light turns golden. It’s an unhurried, beautiful day — exactly what eloping should feel like.
