Queenstown doesn’t do subtle. The landscapes here are operatic — snow-capped ranges, mirror lakes, golden tussock rolling into alpine ridgelines. It’s no wonder couples fly from all over the world to get married here. The real question isn’t whether you’ll get stunning photos — it’s choosing which kind of stunning you’re after.
We’re based in Queenstown and we’ve shot weddings and elopements here across every season and every hour of the day. This is our honest guide to the locations that consistently deliver — including a few that most photographers won’t tell you about, because they’d rather keep them to themselves.
Glenorchy — just 45 minutes from Queenstown — offers a completely different kind of landscape: wilder, more remote, and impossibly beautiful.
If there is one location in New Zealand that stops people mid-scroll, it’s the road to Glenorchy. The 45-minute drive from Queenstown along the western shore of Lake Wakatipu is cinematic in itself. And then Glenorchy opens up: a wide, flat valley floor, mountains on all sides, and a light that photographers dream about.
The area known as Paradise — reached via a gravel road from Glenorchy — was used as a filming location for The Lord of the Rings, and it shows. Beech forest, braided rivers, snow-capped peaks. For couples who want something genuinely wild and remote, there’s nowhere better on the South Island.

The Queenstown lakefront rewards patience and local knowledge. The obvious spots — the pier at sunset, the lake with the Remarkables behind — are obvious for a reason. But the secret is knowing exactly where to stand, when the light falls, and how to use the reflections on the water.
The Queenstown Gardens, on the peninsula just east of the town centre, offer a quieter alternative — mature trees, rose gardens, and lake views without the foot traffic of the main waterfront. In late afternoon, the light through the trees here is extraordinary.
“The Remarkables at sunset, reflected in the lake — it’s the kind of image that makes people question whether it’s been edited. It hasn’t. That’s just what Queenstown does.”
For couples who want the alpine experience without a helicopter, the Remarkables ski field access road winds up into the mountains and delivers jaw-dropping views that most tourists never see. In winter, both locations offer snow — and a snowy backdrop for a Queenstown wedding shoot is something genuinely extraordinary.
VOWLY tip
Both the Remarkables and Coronet Peak roads require permission to access outside ski season. As a local team, we have existing relationships with the ski field operators and can coordinate access for wedding shoots. International photographers often don’t know this — it’s one of the reasons working with a local team matters.
Just 20 minutes from Queenstown, Arrowtown is one of the most charming small towns in New Zealand — and in autumn, it’s arguably the most beautiful. The main street is lined with liquid amber and oak trees that turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold from late April through May.
For the truly unforgettable shot, there are locations in the mountains around Queenstown that are only accessible by helicopter — and Cecil Peak, directly across the lake from Queenstown, is one of the most breathtaking. From the summit, you look down over the Wakatipu basin with Queenstown visible below, the lake winding into the distance, and ranges stacked to the horizon.
A heli-elopement or heli-shoot at Cecil Peak takes about two hours from Queenstown and requires clear weather — but when it comes together, there are very few experiences anywhere in the world that match it for sheer dramatic beauty.

On the road between Queenstown and Arrowtown, Lake Hayes sits quietly in a valley surrounded by willows and rolling hills. It’s one of New Zealand’s most reliably calm lakes — early mornings here produce mirror reflections that make the horizon almost indistinguishable from the water. For a pre-wedding shoot with a soft, romantic, almost dreamy quality, Lake Hayes is hard to beat.
The willow trees overhanging the water’s edge create natural framing that works particularly well for portrait photography. It’s also significantly less busy than the Queenstown waterfront, which makes it easier to have relaxed, unhurried time in front of the camera.
